Tokyo 2026 Asian Games: India Targets Record Medal Haul

The Indian Olympic Association has set a record target of 120 medals at the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled for September. This would surpass India's previous best of 107 medals at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced a special Rs 500 crore fund for final-phase preparation of athletes across 35 sporting disciplines. "Our athletes have been performing exceptionally well in international competitions, and we believe this target is realistic and achievable," he said.

The shooting contingent, which has been dominating World Cup circuits, is expected to contribute the largest share of medals. Athletics, led by javelin star Neeraj Chopra and sprinter Hima Das, is also tipped for a strong showing.

Wrestling and boxing, traditional Indian strengths, have undergone significant squad restructuring following governance reforms. New head coaches appointed earlier this year have introduced modern training methodologies that are already showing results in Asian Championships.
