In a historic moment for Indian cinema, filmmaker Payal Kapadia's "The Weight of Water" has been awarded the Palme d'Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, making it the first Indian film to win the prestigious award in the festival's 79-year history.
The film, a poetic exploration of the lives of migrant construction workers building luxury apartments in Mumbai, was praised by the jury for its "extraordinary visual beauty, profound humanity, and unflinching honesty."
"I dedicate this award to the invisible workers who build our cities," said Kapadia in her acceptance speech, which received a prolonged standing ovation. "Their stories deserve to be told, and I am grateful that the world is listening."
Kapadia, who previously won the Grand Prix at Cannes 2024 for "All We Imagine as Light," has established herself as one of the most important voices in world cinema. Her latest film features a cast of non-professional actors, many of whom are actual construction workers.
Indian film industry leaders hailed the achievement. "This is not just Payal's victory — it is a validation of Indian independent cinema on the world stage," said filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
