Feature: How Varanasi Is Reinventing Itself as a Smart Heritage City

At 5:30 AM, as the first rays of dawn illuminate the ghats of Varanasi, something remarkable becomes visible. Alongside the ancient rituals that have been performed here for millennia, a quiet technological revolution is transforming one of the world's oldest cities.

Solar-powered sensors embedded in the ghats monitor water quality in real-time, displaying results on public screens. AI-powered cameras manage crowd flow during festivals, preventing the stampedes that once claimed lives. Underground pneumatic waste collection systems have replaced the overflowing garbage bins that blighted the lanes.

"The challenge was to modernize without sanitizing," says Gaurav Krishna, the IAS officer heading the Varanasi Smart City project. "We didn't want to create a theme park. We wanted to make an ancient, living city work better for its residents while preserving its soul."

The results are striking. Air quality in the old city has improved by 40% following the pedestrianization of key areas and the introduction of electric boats on the Ganga. Tourism has increased 35%, but more importantly, resident satisfaction surveys show significantly improved quality of life.

The Varanasi model is being studied by UNESCO and the World Bank as a potential template for heritage cities worldwide — places like Jerusalem, Cairo, and Athens that face similar challenges of balancing preservation with modernization.

But not everyone is convinced. Some residents worry that development is displacing traditional communities. "The ghats are becoming beautiful, but the people who made them beautiful are being pushed to the margins," says Rajeshwar Pandey, a sixth-generation boat operator.
