An artificial intelligence-powered glacial lake monitoring system deployed in Uttarakhand has been credited with preventing a potential disaster after it detected the rapid expansion of a glacial lake near Chamoli district and triggered early warnings that enabled the evacuation of 15,000 residents.
The system, developed jointly by IIT Roorkee, ISRO, and the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, uses satellite imagery, IoT sensors, and machine learning algorithms to continuously monitor over 200 glacial lakes across the state.
"The system detected anomalous water accumulation patterns 72 hours before the lake reached critical levels," said Prof. Manish Mehta of IIT Roorkee. "This gave authorities sufficient time to execute an orderly evacuation. Without this early warning, we could have been looking at a repeat of the 2013 Kedarnath tragedy."
The glacial lake eventually breached its moraine dam, releasing a significant volume of water into the Rishiganga valley. However, because communities had already been evacuated, there were no casualties.
The successful deployment has prompted other Himalayan states to express interest in similar systems. The central government has allocated Rs 200 crore for expanding the monitoring network across the entire Himalayan region.
