Tax evasion with TV stars: The case of Mubashar Luqman, Jasmin Manzoor (PartIV)

The Income Tax authorities have also investigated the cases of Asif Raza Mir, Saveera Nadeem, Nouman Ejaz, Nadia Hussain, Mehroz Krim Rind, Humayoon Saeed, Tayyaba Ali, and Umera Ahmed

Mubashar Luqman [CNIC: 35201-5652105-9. National Tax No: 1761653-7] is a noted TV host. He is also a central character in the Mediagate. His income tax returns---or absence of them---have also attracted Income Tax authorities’ attention. According to the investigations conducted by the tax authorities, Mr. Mubashar Luqman earned over 11 million rupees in the tax year 2011. But he did not file any tax returns. For the tax year 2010, he filed income tax returns but did not file any Wealth statement. By law, he is obliged to file Wealth statement as well. Moreover, in 2010 when he filed income tax returns, he mentioned his salary alone that he drew from National Communication Services (Dunya TV) even if he was earning as columnist. He contributed a regular column for the daily Express. In his 2010 tax returns, he did not even mention this source. However, most important miss is an improper taxability. The authorities believe he rendered services which should not be taxed @6. The Income Tax authorities have also indicated to look into allegations that Mr. Luqman was bribed by real estate tycoon Malik Riaz. His foreign trips have also been probed.

The case of Jasmin Manzoor:

Jasmin Shah [CNIC: 4230151541708, National Tax No: 4007242-8], (known as Jasmin Manzoor) hosts a talk show on Samaa TV. She has not filed either any income tax returns or any Wealth statement. She earned Rs 1,408,481 and Rs 14,092,343 in the tax years 2010 and 2011 respectively from Jaag Broadcasting Pvt Ltd (Samaa TV). Moreover, she has been making documentaries. She has received four awards for her work.

The Income Tax authorities have also investigated the cases of Asif Raza Mir, Saveera Nadeem, Nouman Ejaz, Nadia Hussain, Mehroz Krim Rind, Humayoon Saeed, Tayyaba Ali, and Umera Ahmed.
