MUMBAI, Oct 13 (UNI): In what is termed as a major blow to the underworld, four dreaded gangsters owing allegiance to the Abu Salem faction of Karachi-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahims gang were shot dead in an encounter with the city police at Bandra in north-west Mumbai during the wee hours today.

Police said that three of the deceased were identified as Tanvir Shaikh (22), Sajan Kumar Parasnath Singh (22) and Abdul Jamil Javed ahamed Khan alias Babloo (24).

The fourth , a youth aged 23-24 years , was yet to be identified.

Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of unit II of the crime branch laid a trap near St Theresas Church at Bandra off Patwardhan garden, where the four were spotted.

On being asked to surrender, the foursome opened fire on the police team.

They sustained injuries in retaliatory firing by the law enforcement officers and were rushed to the nearby Bhabha hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Two imported pistols, a revolver and a single-barrel Katta (revolver) were recovered.

These gangsters, history-sheeters of the Abu Salem faction, were part of Mumbai polices wanted list in connection with a series of murders, shoot-outs and extortion.

Earlier, this week, crime branch officers arrested six gangsters of "D companys" Chhota Shakeel faction.

They were conspiring to assassinate union home minister L K Advani and carry out a series of explosions in this megapolis and some cities of Uttar Pradesh.

Abu Salem, who is holed up somewhere in Dubai, is wanted by Mumbai police in connection with several crimes, chief among which is the sensational slaying of "cassette king" Gulshan Kumar.
