NEW DELHI, Jan 20 (UNI): Amid the rising worries of climatechange and global warming, Delhi is all set to generatepower via an environmentfriendly mechanism.

Contributing to the initiative of 'Green Delhi', BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) today decided to procure power from the city's renewable waste.

"BRPL has signed a 25year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with TimarpurOkhla Waste Management Company Private Limited (TOWMCL) to buy electricity from Delhi's largest waste to power initiative being set up at Okhla," BRPL CEO Gopal Saxena said.

"We will procure 50 per cent of the exportable electricity, generated by the underconstruction 16 MW 'waste to energy' power plant in Okhla at an approved competitive tariff rate," he added.

Significantly, the plant, to be commissioned late this year, is expected to lead to annual emission reductions equivalent to 2,66,066 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The project, awarded to TOWMCL, will process over 6,43,500 lakh metric tonnes or onethird of Delhi's municipal solid waste per year generated in Delhi.

Of this, around 1300 tonnes per day will be sourced from the Okhla landfill site and 650 tonnes per day from Timarpur.

A similar project which will utilise Delhi's waste to generate power is under construction at Ghazipur.

Together, the two projects will generate 26 MW of electricity.

Such steps will also earn Carbon Credits for Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
