EC refuses to register Murlidharan's party as NC (Indira)
NEW DELHI, Aug 24 (UNI): The Election Commission today rejected the K Murlidharan's petition to register his newly floated party asNational Congress (Indira), asking him to send a fresh list of names.
In its order, the Commission said it had no objection to use of the name of Indira Gandhi for the party but agreed with theIndian National Congress (Indira), which had contested the Murlidharan group's demand, that the similarity may confuse the voters as both had Indira as the last name.
After K Karuanakaran, former Kerala Chief Minister, parted ways with the INC (I), his son Murlidharan had applied for registering a new party with the name National Congress (Indira).
The Congress party, headed by Mrs Sonia Gandhi, contested the plea and both sides were heard on August 9.
The Congress argued that the proposed party name is similar to the Indian National Congress (Indira).
The commission upheld the INC (Indira) views and has asked the Murlidharan's party to send a fresh name for registering his political party.
