Gasping for Breath in Kashmir: COPD Patients Suffer Due To Power Cuts & High Tariffs

Increasing power cuts in Kashmir are significantly affecting the health and well-being of many residents, particularly those suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

COPD patients rely heavily on consistent access to power for their respiratory equipment, such as oxygen concentrators and ventilators. However, frequent and prolonged power cuts across Kashmir are putting these vulnerable individuals at grave risk.

With winter temperatures dropping and air quality deteriorating, the situation is becoming increasingly dire. The lack of reliable electricity is exacerbating their symptoms, leading to frequent hospitalizations and, in some cases, life-threatening emergencies.

A study by the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) found that 17.3% of Kashmir has COPD.
