Geelani, Shabir Javid arrested in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Feb 9 (UNI) About a dozen separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Javid Ahmad Mir were taken into preventive custody at Safapora this afternoon, official sources said.

They said chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani, his three associates, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) vice chairman Javid Ahmad Mir and six others were detained by the police.

Spokespersons of the HC, JKDFP and JKLF told UNI that these leaders were on way to Bandipora, where people have been protesting the killing of five labourers allegedly by security forces.

The leaders were sceduled to address the mourners and also participate in demonstrations against the killings, they said.
