India, Singapore hold bilateral defence talksNew
Delhi, June 21 (UNI): India and Singapore today held wide-ranging discussions on further consolidating their historically close defence relations with visiting Singaporean Army Chief Major General Desmond Kuek exploring conduct of joint military manoeuvres.
Gen Kuek, who arrived here yesterday on a three-day official visit, today held discussions with Defence Secretary Ajai Vikram Singh, Army Chief General JJ Singh and Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal SK Malik during which matters of mutual interest came up for discussion, an official spokesperson here said.
The visiting Army Chief, buoyed by joint air and naval exercises earlier held between Indian and Singaporean forces, also explored holding similar manoeuvres between the land forces of the two countries.
With Singapore being just 647.5 sq kms in area, its defence forces find it difficult to carry out large-scale exercises.
Last October the Singapore Air Force exercised with the Indian Air Force in Gwalior while the two navies are cooperating against gunrunning and smuggling on the high seas.
Gen Kuek is slated to meet Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee- and Naval Chief-Admiral Arun Prakash and Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen BS Thakur.
During the day today, he was also given a detailed presentation on the Army's training facilities as well as on Defence Production and Supplies facilities in the country.
During his visit, Gen Kuek and his top-level entourage will later visit the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as well as Bharat Electronics in Bangalore-with India keen to explore markets for its Advanced Light Helicopters and Radars, for which Singapore is a potential customer.
