Industry backlash scares Congress ahead of by-elections
NEW DELHI, OCT 11 (Agencies): The Sheila Dikshit government's drive to shift industries out of residential areas in Delhi has created a scare of backlash in the ruling Congress which aims at retaining its two seats in the Assembly by-elections on Wednesday.
The fear was clearly evident as the party's Delhi unit Vice President Narendra Nath addressed a press conference, devoting most of it to the issue and asserting that the government would do everything necessary not to put the owners and workers to hardship.
The Government will not allow industries to be relocated or shut and is preparing an affidavit to be submitted to the Supreme Court regarding relocation of non-conforming units, Nath said.
Dikshit, who was to address the press but could not because of her visit to Aligarh, in a statement said industries will be relocated only after developing alternate sites with all facilities.
She said her Government will take no step that could adversely affect owners of small-scale industries and lakhs of workers.
The by-polls at Rajouri Garden constituency and Baljit Nagar constituency have been necessitated because of election of Ajay Maken and Krishna Tirath to the Lok Sabha.
Maken and Tirath, who have retained the two seats for three terms in a row, were present at the press conference along with party's candidates Ramesh Lamba and Rajesh Lilothia.
