Left not receptive to needs of poor in WB: Rahul Gandhi
DONKAL (WEST BENGAL), May 2 (Agencies): Taking on the Left in their bastion, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused the Communist government in the state of not being receptive to the needs of the poor.
"I thought, if it is a Communist government, it would be for the (welfare of) poor but that has not turned out to be true," Gandhi said, in a direct attack on the Left which supported the Congress led UPA government for over four years.
"In Delhi, they (Left) say that the poor people should progress along with the country.
They supported us...We brought the employment guarantee scheme and loan waiver," he said.
Gandhi, however, said that when he came to Bengal, he learnt that industries were not being set up in the state.
"This could be their (Left) thinking...But this is wrong.
They also said that the employment scheme (NREGA) does not work here," the young Congress leader said.
The AICC general secretary said that for the Congress, the progress and development of the country involves the progress of the poor.
