National seminar concludes
'Urdu language is secular in character' KT NEWS SERVICE JAMMU, Mar 2: Two day national seminar on 'Secular character of Urdu language' concluded here today in seminar hall of Environment Sciences Department in the University of Jammu.
Prominent citizens of the state besides the delegates from different parts of the country attended the valedictory function..
Chairman The Kashmir Times group of publications Ved Bhasin was the chief guest.
Member of Legislative Council Mohammed Yousuf Taing presided over the function while the secretary Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Language Rafiq Masoodi was also present on the occasion.
The delegates dwelt at length different aspects related to the topic and stressed for the promotion of Urdu language.
While addressing the gathering, Taing appreciated the efforts of 'Centre for Professional Studies' in Urdu, 'National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language' and 'University of Jammu' for organizing such a seminar in Jammu.
He applauded the role of Bhasin for the promotion of Urdu language in the state.
In his address, Rafeeq Masoodi informed the gathering about the works undertaken by the Academy for the propagation and promotion of Urdu language.
He said that the Academy is going to revise and publish the Urdu version of Ramayana written by Khalid Hussain.
Whereas, noted Urdu poet Prof Lutful Rehman threw light on the causes of decline of the Urdu language.
He appealed to the people to come forward for the propagation of the language.
He said that the language has a secular character, while adding that the language is not related to any particular religion.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhasin said that Urduhas been a language of masses and the writers used this language for effectively fighting against the social evils.
He added that Urdu litterateurs through their writings created wrote their composition for the awareness among the masses.
He maintained that Urdu literature helped in promoting the spirit of oneness and equality among the people.
He averred that Urdu language broke the barriers of conflict.
"Unfortunately, the that the language after independ was linked with a particular community," he stated and added that such seminars would help in restoring the Urdu language its lost place.
He said that the Jammu and Kashmir is the only state of India where the official language is Urdu.
"But the government apathy towards it is unfortunate," he stated.
Shohab Inayat Malik welcomed the guests and said that Urdu has played a pivotal role in maintaining communal harmony and in freedom struggle.
Others who spoke on the occasion included, Yousuf Gohri, Prof.
Atiqullah, Farooq Bakshi, Aftab Alam, Anwar Zaheer, Majeed Muzmer, Anand Lehar, Khalid Hussain and A.Q.Wani.
Tariq Tamkeen ably conducted the proceedings programme and Shahid Rasool presented vote of thanks.
Taing was also felicitated on this occasion.
