Natwar Singh hands over 49 vehicles to ANA
KABUL, Feb 15 (UNI): External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh today handed over 49 of the 300 vehicles committed to the Afghan National Army (ANA) as part of India's efforts towards the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
"As part of the international efforts for reconstruction of Afghanistan, India had committed substantial amount of money and has undertaken projects in wide range of areas," Singh told reporters after handing over the vehicles to ANA at a function here.
"We would be happy to cooperate with ANA further.
India has made a commitment of 300 vehicles out of which 235 have already been given.
Fortynine were handed today and 16 would be given later." The Minister also announced gifting of 5000 metres of cloth for Afghan army uniform.
Afghan Defence Minister Rahim Wardak said ANA has been the backbone of security, stability and peace in Afghanistan and it would like to take security of the entire country in its own hands.
He appreciated the cooperation extended by various countries to ANA and said he was looking forward to further cooperation from India.
Later, Singh drove to the Indira Gandhi Institue of Child Health, which was built with India's assistance, and inaugurated a surgery ward.
"India is ready to extend any assistance to the hospital in upgrading of medical facilities." He also announced further assistance to the hospital by India in setting up incinerator, a diagnostic centre, training of paramedics and doctors, setting up of a medical library and establishment of telemedicine wing.
