Right of self-determination can ensure peace: Hurriyat (G)
KT NEWS SERVICE SRINAGAR, Jan 4: Hurriyat Conference (G) today said if Kashmiris are convinced that they will be provided a right to determine their own future, they will prove they are a peace loving people.
On the eve of 55th anniversary of the first UN resolution on Kashmir today, Hurriyat Conference (G) today said the issue continues to put a question mark over the credibility of the world body.
A Hurriyat spokesman said it was on January 5, 1949 that the UN for the first time passed a resolution on Kashmir.
"The UN pledged to provide every support for holding a plebiscite here to provide Kashmiris an opportunity to resolve Kashmir issue", he said.
He said 18 resolutions were passed on Kashmir subsequently.
"But till date they have not been implemented.
By putting these resolutions on hold, the credibility of world body has suffered.
This has also raised suspicions over the future of the UN", he said.
The Hurriyat said New Delhi has occupied Kashmir by force.
"And on January 5, 2005 it is continuing the illegal occupation of Kashmir.
It is also perpetuating grave human rights abuses to sustain its rule", he said.
The spokesman regretted the UN is a mere spectator to these violations.
Justifying the emergence of "resistance movements" in Kashmir, the spokesman said, it is natural in such a backdrop.
"Every nation has passed through this phase and these countries are now considered civilised, developed and cultured", he said.
He said Kashmiris are a peaceful nation.
"If right to self determination is assured to them, they will prove that they are a peace loving people and that they crave for international peace", he said.
The Hurriyat has urged the UN secretary general and other "justice loving countries" to advise India to adopt a realistic approach and implement the UN resolutions.
