School damaged in attempt to disrupt female education in Pakistan

By Staff Reporter • 2004-03-11 • 2 min read

ISLAMABAD Feb 19 (DPA) Days after destroying six schools, miscreants opposing female education damaged another girls primary school in northern Pakistan, private TV channel 'Geo' reported today.

The school in the Chilas Valley, some 260 kilometres north of the capital Islamabad, was damaged in an overnight attempt by the vandals to set the building on fire.

Six primary schools were burned down Sunday night in Diamir district near the northern mountainous town of Gilgit.

People in remote areas of northern Pakistan are known for their conservatism and are strictly averse to girls being educated.

The government, with the help of foreign donors, has set up several community-run schools in these areas, much to the dislike of the local conservative groups who view any foreign-funded project as " cultural intervention".
