They smile directly at you and it hits you right in the eye.

They raise their hands to beckon the waiter and you can notice it.

It is all about the new range of shimmer that has bombarded the teen fashion market lately.

Today, the cosmetics scene has undergone a sea change with shimmer & glitter ruling the roost.

And youngsters know exactly what they want and how they want it to look.

But remember Shimmer and glitter are not the same.

The shiny particles in shimmer are more finely ground and are tiny.

Glitter has more chunky pieces and flakes.

Shimmer give you a more translucent effect.

The particles have prisms in them, so that light falling on an area with shimmer gets refracted an diffused.

Skin appears smooth and flaws are hidden.

But glitter is pigment-based and opaque and light is allowed to reflect so the effect is not the same.

Which works better? Earlier glitter was a low quality option, but now you get glitter and shimmer in a verity of qualities and price ranges.

And because they hide wrinkles, shimmer is even being used in some foundations today.

Shimmer is subtle it has a frost feel and you can use more of it.

Glitter and shimmer is both available in different forms but gels and glosses are really popular right now.

Shimmer is easier to apply, , but for a strong sparkle effect, glitter needs to be mixed with an oil-based cream so that it sticks! Shining and don't know where to go? Shimmer on the lids, collarbone, shoulder and navel, people with chiselled featured can wear it anywhere and beauticians especially recommend shimmer on the cheekbones.

If you're wearing a dress that leaves a shoulder bare, a bit of shimmer on the curve of the shoulder highlights it nicely.

In fact just use it on any part of the body you'd want highlighted.

For glitter, it is recommended using it on the body and even with your lipstick.

Can Shimmer & Glitter go wrong? Any flaw you don't want highlighted is a bad place.

Fashionistas both advise that the nose looks too prominent when shimmer is applied .

People with oily skin tend to powder their nose with it and the overall effect just looks too shiny.Shimmer is used at places where light is reflected, which means on your features as the cheekbones, brow bones and temples.

This would give that much desired sun-kissed look without actually being at the beach.

You can get a softer, radiant effect by dusting shimmer powder, where light hits your face.

The tops of the cheeks, forehead, tip of the chin and tip of the nose, places where sunlight normally hits, could use a touch of shimmer powder for that ethereal radiance.

Which shimmer colours work best with Indian skins? One would recommends peaches and pinks.

They are universal colours,they suit all skin tones.

But some beauticians prefer copper red, gold, silver and even blue that looks great on warm skin tones.

Generally peach is a safe colour since it brightens a sallow complexion.

You can also use silver highlights for the evening.

Which products give the best results? It is a thumbs up to the shimmer range at MAC Nina Ricci and Elizabeth Arden, Lakme has a new roll on shimmer which is also very convenient.

L'Oreal and Maybelline have some good products too but most people in India prefer a matte look.

Revlon's street wear has a glitter gel which is easy to use.

You could also pick up pigments (coloured powders) to mix with your moisturiser/lipstick/lip gloss to add a dash of colour and shimmer on your face.

For evening wear, a light shimmer eye shadow, eyeliner and kajal, a glossy lip colour can make you look glamorous.

For night, slick on a shimmery eye liner in a deep or bright color.

Use a strong eyeliner and line the upper lash line, thickening the line and winging out at the outer edge of each eye for a dramatic finish.

Younger women in their twenties and early thirties will look amazing in shimmer makeup.

If you are young, you can go all out with your makeup colors.

Use the most vibrant metallics you can find as you can get away with them.
