Snow in higher altitudes, rains lash plains
CHANDIGARH, Oct 11 (Agencies): The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh received snowfall while moderate to heavy rain lashed northern parts of the country today leading to a fall in maximum temperatures and giving rise to cold conditions in some places.
The peaks of Himachal were covered by a thick white blanket.
Patsio had a snowfall of 10 cm, according to the Meteorological Department here.
Shimla and its adjoining areas were lashed by heavy rain and high-velocity winds.
Heavy rain (32 mm) lashed Chandigarh throughout the day and normal life was affected.
Cold conditions persisted and the day temperature plunged seven degrees below normal to record 23.6 degrees Celsius.
In Haryana, Ambala was lashed by 15 mm of rain and the maximum dropped by nine degrees at 25.2 C while Karnal was also pounded by rains.
Wet weather prevailed in Hisar, Panchkula, Kalka, Sonepat and Gurgaon since yesterday.
In Punjab, Ludhiana had a heavy downpour today at 45 mm and the maximum dropped by a record eleven degrees at 23.4 C.
Patiala, Ropar and Nangal Dam area were among other towns in the state to receive rains.
Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir saw the mercury in the day plummet by eight degrees at 16.8 degrees Celsius while the night was cold at 7.4 C.
Both its capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu were lashed by rains since yesterday.
