Sonia flays Tonk incident, calls it failure of state BJP govt

JAIPUR, June 23 (UNI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi today flayed the "police brutality" on farmers agitating for water at Tonk last week and said the incident highlighted the failure on the part of the BJP-led Rajasthan government.

In a brief interaction with reporters after touring Tonk district, where five persons were killed in police firing, the Congress President said any proposal from the state government for mitigating the water crisis in the region would be "considered" by the UPA government at the Centre.

She met relatives of the victi at Bawadi, Jhirana and Sohela and eight of the injured who are admitted to hospital in Tonk.

According to party sources here, she also distributed an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh each to the next of kin of the five persons killed in the June 13 incident.
