Sonia releases Hindi software tools, fonts, website

NEW DELHI, June 20 (UNI) National Advisory Council Chairperson SoniaGandhi today released a set of Hindi software tools and fonts in aCompact Disc for free public distribution, and expressed confidencethat it would help in bridging the digital divide and thusempowering the people belonging to different strata of society.

Gandhi also launched the Hindi version of the India Language Data Centre website (www.ildc.gov.in) from which the Hindi tools and fonts are downloadable by the public and the developer community.

She distributed the CDs to the CEOs and editors of Hindi news organisations such as Aaj Tak, Dainik Jagaran, Dainik Bhaskar, Jansatta, Hindustan, Navbharat Times and UNIVARTA.

The CD contains Hindi true type fonts with keyboard and driver, Hindi multifont keyboard engine for true type fonts, English-Hindi Dictionary, Hindi language spell checker, integrated word processor, Hindi language transliteration tool, Hindi language text to speech system, and nine other ite.

As many as 525 Hindi fonts can be downloaded.

The CD and the website has been developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an autonomous society under the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

Asserting that it was the fulfilment of Rajiv Gandhi's dream to make India computer savvy, she described it as a step forward in Information Technology.

She said the Right to Information Bill, passed in Parliament in the last session, and the launch of the Hindi software tools would bring about a people's revolution in the country.

Pointing out that an individual talent can be best showed in ones own mother tongue, she expressed the hope that the Hindi software would become a tool for nation building.

India, she said, had made good progress in space technology and was moving forward in the sphere of biotechnology.

"We can be self-reliant in other areas and Information Technology will play an important role," she said.
