282 live ammunition pieces found in Rajasthan

JAIPUR, OCT 11 (Agencies): As many as 282 pieces of live ammunition and a huge quantity of empty shells were today recovered during digging operations to unearth buried scrap containing imported explosives in various foundries in Rajasthan.

Most of the recoveries - 260 ammunition - were made from Balaji Industries from where 190 live ammunitions were recovered till yesterday taking their total number to 450, police said.

Fourteen ammunitions were found abandoned in the fields at two places in Bilhaheri village near Bhiwadi industrial area of Alwar and four each at Savitri and Mangla foundries in Jhotwara industrial area, Inspector General of Police O P Galhotra told PTI.

Digging was undertaken at R N Forging at Bagru in Jaipur district but heavy rains disrupted identification work, he said adding army was also called to confirm the potency of the recovered pieces.

A huge quantity of empty shells were also recovered from these sites, the IGP said.

Owners of some foundries have started digging their junk yards for hidden ammunition, he said adding police was keeping a close vigil on their operation.
