32 bonded labourers rescued in Panipat

CHANDIGARH, Aug 31 (UNI): As many as 32 bonded labourers havebeen rescued from two industrial units in Panipat district of Haryana.

Reports received here today said a team of the Labour Department raided the two units on Monday following complaints by CPI (ML) and some labour unions.

Twenty four workers were rescued from a textile factory in Panipat who were allegedly working as bonded labour for the past six months while another eight were freed from a carpet manufacturing unit in the city.

Most of the rescued workers were migrant labourers from West Bengal.

District CPI (ML) secretary P P Kapoor had alleged that these workers were confined to the factories and were not even provided the basic amenities.

Kapoor alleged that the Labour Department had not initiated any action against the factory owners even as it had rescued the bonded labourers.
