62nd Santosh Trophy

Karnataka trounces Goa, enters semis Karnataka upset favourites Goa in their last Group B quarterfinal league round match with a solitary goal win in a tie of the ongoing 62nd National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy played today at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.

Karnataka thus qualified for the semifinals as also topped the Group B.

Goa looked more confidant but looked as if playing for a draw.

While Karnataka attacked at every opportunity .

The defensive strategy proved costly for Goa as its players never look in their rhythm against underdogs Karnataka.

The winning goal of the match came in the 60th minute of the match through captain of Karnataka team, Xavier Vijaya Kumar, who led from the front to score the decider.

Karnataka slowed down after the strike .Goa team, that comprised more than eight professional footballers could not find touch and missed as many as four open chances.

In the other quarterfinal match of Group B Maharashtra were held to a 1-1 draw by 29 times champions West Bengal.

Maharashtra went for lemon break with a 1-0 lead after Soccor Velho converted a pass from Paresh Shivalkar just before half time.

Jayanto Sen brought parity for West Bengal with his strike in the 58th minute of the second half.

Draw meant Bengal team which secured five points had to be satisfied with second spot and a clash with Group A topper Services on June 12 ,while Karnataka which secured six points topped Group B will fight it out with defending champions on June 13.

DPS wins U-14 Badminton title KT NEWS SERVICE JAMMU, June 10: Delhi Public School Shuttler Akhil Khajuria , a student of class IV won the Under-19 boys single title in the Open Badminton tournament, organised by Super Sonic Badminton Club at MA Stadium complex from June 3 to 7.

In doubles, Akhil’s team out willed the opposite team by 21-13 and 21-8 to emerge as the winner in the said tournament and bagged two gold medals in singles and doubles.

Ayush Raina of Class VII from same school, who had recently attended the North Zone Badminton camp held at Jalandhar also participated in the Under-16 age group and gave excellent performance.

He was also felicitated by the chief guest.

Distt Jammu win double title in Inter-district football KT NEWS SERVICE JAMMU, June 10: Hosts Jammu district bagged both under-17 and under-14 championships of the Divisional level inter-district boys football tournament, organized by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSSJ) at MA Stadium, here today.

In final of under-17 , Jammu boys outplayed Rajouri by 3-0.

Rahul Sharma and Gautam Mehra helped Jammu take an unbeatable 2-0 lead at the end of first half of the match.

Later, after the breather Sahil added another goal to make it a 3-0 win.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, played today, Jammu beat Poonch 3-0 while Rajouri outplayed Udhampur 3-1.

Jammu boys also claimed the under-14 title trouncing district Poonch 2-0.

Dimple scored both the goals for Jammu in either half of the match.

Before the start of the match both the sides were introduced with Assistant Director (J) , Ashok Kumar.

In the under-14 semi-finals, played today, Poonch trounced Kathua by a solitary goal and Jammu blanked Rajouri 5-0.

Deputy Director, Madan Lal was chief guest on the occasion.

Assistant Director, Ashok Kumar guest of honour in the concluding function.

Inderjeet Kour (district officer Kathua), R C Vaid, Raj Kumar, B K Tikoo, Rajesh Dhar, Sanjay Raina, Chanchal Kour, Ramesh Pandit, Veena Tikoo and Sarita Padha were also present in the concluding function.
