KT NEWS SERVICE SRINAGAR, Feb 20: After BJP president M.Venkaiah Naidu kick started his party's election campaign from here, it is now the turn of Congress to hit the campaign trail in strife-torn Kashmir.
The ruling PDP-Congress combine has decided to jointly kick off their election campaign for forthcoming Lok Sabha polls on February 21 from the apple rich town of Sopore, 50 kilometers north of Srinagar.
On this occasion, Congress is organising a public rally in Sopore tomorrow in which chief minister Mufti Mohommad Sayeed, Congress general secretary in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir Ambika Soni, PCC president Ghulam Nabi Azad and PCC vice-president Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed are participating.
"Everybody is coming in this rally which has been organized by the local MLA Abdul Rasheed Haji.
Chief minister Mufti Mohommad Sayeed is also coming to address the rally", said Peerzada Mohommad Sayeed, the J&K PCC vice-president.
He also informed that the Youth Congress pad yatra from Uri to Lakhanpur has been suspended.
"It was an endeavor of Youth Congress to start the pad yatra from Uri-Lakhanpur, but it has been suspended.
We plan to organize it after some time", Peerzada said.
It will be for the first time in 13 years of insurgency that Congress will hold a rally in Sopore which was once described as capital of militancy in Kashmir.
Sopore is also the stronghold of hard line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in Sopore in view of the public rally.
Massive deployment of police and para military forces have been effected in the apple rich town.
Additional naka points have been created and security forces are keeping close watch on the people's movement.
Random frisking of pedestrians has also been intensified to keep ultras at bay.
Patrolling on road and night ambushes are also being laid to maintain peace and prevent any violent incident.
Sopore being the hot spot in Kashmir, security forces are not leaving anything to chance.
With some central leaders arriving, additional precautions are being taken to maintain calm and have an incident fee rally in the apple rich town.
