Army orders court of inquiry into meat scam

KT NEWS SERVICE UDHAMPUR, Nov 24 : Northern Command GOC-in C Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor today said court of inquiry had been ordered into the allegations of irregularities in the purchase of meat for troops in the forward areas of Ladakh and Siachin in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is the third court of inquiry in the Army's Northern Command faced with two other purchase scams of petroleum products and liquor.

"We have ordered a probe into the allegations of irregularities in the contracted supply of meat running into crores of rupees", Lt Gen Kapoor said.

Though he did not name the officers alleged to be involved in the scam, he said appropriate action would be taken against the guilty whatever their level.

Lt Gen Kapoor said he wanted to make it clear that no act of commission or omission would be suppressed or overlooked during the course of inquiry.

Referring to surrender by three militants soon after they infiltrated into the Indian territory from Rajouri yesterday, he said the misguided youth undergoing training in militant training camps in PoK wanted to come back and join the national mainstream.

He said the militants in Jammu and Kashmir had fallen short of weapons and ration in view of the devastation caused to their camps in PoK by the October 8 quake.

He said there was three-tier security system along the LoC to foil infiltration attempts by the Pakistan-based militants.

Special posts had been set up in certain areas to intercept infiltrating militants, he added.

In reply to a query, the GOC-IN-C said the militants had carried out recent attacks in Srinagar just to demonstrate their presence.
