Battle royale for poll tickets in MP

BHOPAL, Nov 5 (UNI): Leaders of Madhya Pradesh's ruling BJP and main opposition Congress are vexed over a virtual tug of war in both camps over the distribution of tickets for civic bodies' hustings later this month.

While factional rivalry and strong claims have made groupism and discontent come to the fore in the Congress, even marathon meetings by saffron party bigwigs failed to make the picture clear regarding candidates.

Ticket claimants have not left any stone unturned and a woman leader's self immolation bid was foiled yesterday by police outside the state Congress office here.

She was seeking a ticket for a corporator's post.

Madhya Pradesh Congress President Subhash Yadav drew flak for "partiality." In view of the circumstances, Youth Congress (YC) Secretary Ajay Maken was sent here.

Even Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Pachauri also came to calm his supporters.

Peeved over youths being ignored in the ticket distribution process, state YC President Meenakshi Natarajan announced her resignation while several senior party leaders were gheraoed and faced protest demonstrations.

The BJP has declared mayoral nominees for 11 of 13 municipal corporations while the choices for Bhopal and Indore were left to the bigwigs.

The saffron party yesterday announced aspirants for 42 of 66 wards within the Bhopal Municipal Corporation.

The Congress was likely to declare candidates late tomorrow, which also happens to be the last date for filing nomination papers.
