Bench reserves orders on scrapping of CET

CHENNAI, June 23 (UNI) The Madras High Court today reserved orders on a batch of petitions challenging the Government Order (GO) abolishing Common Entrance Tests (CET) for admission to professional courses in the State and doing away with improvement examinations from this year.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Markandey Katju and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulah reserved orders after hearing elaborate arguments from both the petitioners and the government side.

During the course of today's arguments too, the bench indicated that the controversial GO, issued by the state government on June 9, declaring that admissions to professional courses would be purely based on plus two marks to help rural students, was liable to be struck down.

Over 400 students, aggrieved by the scrapping of CET and cancellation of marks scored in improvement examinations, had moved the court, seeking to strike down the GO.

While appreciating the government's stand that it wanted to help rural students, who were facing a disadvantage because of CET, the bench suggested that the state government could approach the Centre to amend the regulations in order to help rural students.

DMK chief welcomes PMK's decision to stay in DPA CHENNAI, Jun 23 (UNI) Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President M Karunanidhi today welcomed the Pattali Makkal Katchi's (PMK) decision to stay in the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) to defeat the "anti-people" AIADMK government in the Assembly elections next year.

In an epistle to party cadres, Karunanidhi said the resolution passed by the PMK general council yesterday, declaring that the party would continue in the DPA, had come at a time when the ruling AIADMK was going about with its disinformation campaign that there was confusion in the DPA and it was about to disintegrate.

Accusing the AIADMK of launching a conspiracy to break the DPA, the DMK leader said on a day when it spread rumours that the DPA suffered a break, the PMK general council passed the resolution, categorically stating that it would remain in the DPA and condemned the ruling AIADMK for spreading rumours.

The resolution adopted at the general council of the PMK, the highest policy making body of the party, held at Thailapuram, near Tindivanam last evening, had put an end to speculation that the PMK would walk out from the DPA and renew its ties with the AIADMK for the coming Assembly elections in the state.
