NEW DELHI, Apr 4 (UNI): Pattayu Chumpet of Thailand survived a three-set thriller but Albina Khabibulina of Uzbekistan kept her rival at bay as they lifted the boys' and girls' titles respectively in the ITF Asian under-14 tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here today.
Pitted against Tsung-Hua Yang of Chinese Taipei, Chumpet was made to toil for every point and the Thai made a successful comeback from the brink of defeat in the see-saw match.
Yang meant business in the first set and despite Chumpet's occasional flash of brilliance, he went on to clinch the set.
In the second set too, Yang looked in control of the proceedings and defeat stared Chumpet at face.
Realising it could be too late, the Thai then raised his game and just managed to win the second set to stretch it to the decider.
After his brilliant display in the first two sets, Yang looked a bit jaded in the third and gave leeway to Chumpet who staged a brilliant comeback as Yang saw the title slipping through his fingers.
Chumpet was drained after his gruelling 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win in the final.
Only Indian in the last four, third seed Christopher Marquis lost 4-6, 2-6 to Ryan Cheung of Hong Kong to finish fourth.
In the girl's section, Albina Khabibulina of Uzbekistan made it look easy as she beat Noopawan Lertcheewaka of Thailand in straight sets.
Khabibulina looked a bit rusty in the first set but still managed to win it and the second turned out a completely one-sided affair with the Uzbek girl dictating terms.
Khabibulina won 6-4, 6-1.
Thailand's Nicha Lertpitaksinci, meanwhile, trounced Yun Ku (Chinese Taipei) 6-3, 6-2 in the third-fourth position match.
In boys doubles, Taipei duo of Cheng Peng Hsieh and Tsung Hua Yang overcame Sameer Paranjpe and his Indonesia partner David Agung Susanto 7-5, 6-3 to win the title.
In the girl's section, Lertpitaksinci partnered fellow Thai Satjaporn Mahajaroenki to beat Uzbek pair of Khabibulina and Alexandra Kolesnichenk 6-4, 6-3.
