Congress using CBI as tool ahead of trust vote: CPI

NEW DELHI, July 14 (Agencies): Ahead of the confidence vote in Parliament, the Communist Party of India today accused the government of "letting loose tremendous horse-trading" to remain in power and using the CBI as a "political tool" to harass BSP chief Mayawati.

The party attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying he had the "single agenda" of pushing the nuclear deal somehow and for this had reached out to Samajwadi Party after it became clear that the Left would not support the atomic agreement.

Addressing a press conference after the party's two-day National Executive meeting, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan condemned the filing of affidavit by CBI against the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in a disproportionate assets case.

"To somehow remain in power, the ruling party is resorting to all manoeuvres and indulging in horse-trading.

Even the CBI is being used to switch off or switch on its so-called investigation and prosecution and launch cases just at this moment according to what will help the ruling party to rig up a majority," he alleged.

"Tremendous horse-trading has been let loose.

The running rate is astronomically high, we are told.

The CBI also has been dragged into this effort...

The country's premier investigating agency has become a political tool in their (government's) hands," the CPI leader alleged.

He said the party was in touch with Mayawati with regard to the July 22 confidence motion and she has "clearly" told the CPI that her party would vote against the government as she too is opposed to the nuclear deal.
