EC asks Centre to adhere to model code of conduct

NEW DELHI, Feb 19 (UNI):The election commission today asked the central government to adhere to the spirit of model code of conduct even as it had completed the consultation process with all state governments and the union government.

The poll panel has already expressed its unhappiness over the violation of code of conduct.

The CEC has said that the 'India Shining' campaign by the NDA government was against the spirit of of code of conduct.

The EC, which held a crucial meeting with home secretary Anil Baijal this evening, also asked the union government to ensure sufficient deployment of para-military forces for coming elections.

This is the first meeting of the full commission with mr baijal.

Chief election commissioner t s krishanmurthy, along with election commissioner b b tandon and n gopalaswamy were present during the 20 miniute meeting.

The commission also sought a plan from the central government on the security requirements and their movements at the time of polling day and also provide security for the electronic voting machines (evms) in the strong room.

The poll panel wanted that enough security arrangements should be made for transportation of election materials before and after the polling.

Meanwhile, the government, in view of the school examination, has suggested the ec to conduct the polls in the country after april 15.

It also wants that the poll process be completed by may 5.

The commission, which has completed consultations with the states yesterday, will also meet the six recognised national and 48 regional political parties tomorrow after which the poll schedule may be announced any day.

Sources in the ec said that the poll panel is likely to announce the poll dates on monday, when the karnataka assembly would also stand dissolved as recommended by the karnataka government, headed by s m krishna.

In the forthcoming elections, the ec will use a new simplified nomination form, which would also contain details like their assets and others as directed by the supreme court recently.

The meeting, besides seeking views of political parties on various issues, will also indicate the possible time frame for the elections.

The commission has already completed the consultations with the state and central governments and the meeting with political parties will possibly be the last exercise before announcing the polling dates.
