Flood toll rises to 248 in Assam

GUWAHATI, Aug 6 (UNI); The toll in the Assam floods rose to 248 with the death of 11 more persons even as water levels in the rivers in the worst-affected districts of Morigaon, Karimganj and Barpeta have started receding.

Though water levels of all rivers, except Brahmaputra are receding, overall flood situation is still grim.

In the worst affected Morigaon district, communication through all major roads and link roads was disturbed.

Sanitation drive is still continuing on a massive scale in the area and medical check-ups are continuing in the relief camps.

According to the latest reports, nine persons have reportedly died due to drowning in flood water in Barpeta district and two persons have died due to diarrhoea taking the death toll in district to 54.

Road communication has been partially restored in some places of Hailakandi district and relief is continuing for the affected people.

Water levels at Longai and Singla are flowing below danger level, while Kushiara is still flowing above the danger mark in Karimganj district.

The district authorities said so far, 3,76,327 quintals of rice, 33,539 quintals of pulses, 12,322 quintals of salt, 1,687 quintals of chira and 483 quintals of gur were distributed among affected people.

Totally 10,560 villages in the state comprising 28,50,880 lakh hectares were affected by the flood out of which around 12,57,882 lakh hectares crops were destroyed.

Around one and a half crore people were affected and around six lakh houses were fully damaged, the authorities added.
