The assurance came from the prime minister after chief minister A K Antony drew his attention to concern being expressed by relatives of missing people, who had gone Haj pilgrimage.

While two pilgrims from the state were reported dead in the tragedy, several were still missing and their family members were deeply concerned about their safety.

The chief minister sought the centre's help to get information speedily from Jeddah about the pilgrims.

Antony, who had a brief meeting with the prime minister at Raj Bhavan last night, also sought Liberal Central Assistance for the drought-hit areas of the state.

"The prime minister has assured sympathetic consideration of the demand," Antony told reporters at Thiruvananthapuram airport after seeing off Vajpayee.

The prime minister, who arrived here from Nagercoil, left for Delhi.

He was seen off at the airport by Governor Sikandar Bakht, the chief minister, several state ministers, senior government officials and BJP leaders.
