MUMBAI, Dec 2 (NNN) : Pushed up by a sharp hike in the prices of vegetables and fruits, Indias annual inflation rate shot up further by another 0.06 per cent to 2.53 per cent for the week ended November 17.
The index was 2.47 per cent in the previous week.
The inflation rate for the corresponding period last higher, however, was much higher at 7.48 per cent.
According to official figures, during the week under review, there was also a major increase in the price of eggs on account of winter in the northern part of the country, though prices came down for many of the non-food articles and manufactured products, including coconut oil, ghee and cement.
The wholesale price index (WPI), however, stood firm at the previous weeks level of 162 and the index was lower at 158 a year ago period.
The final WPI stood marginally lower at 161.8 in the week ended September 22, as against the provisional level of 161.9, while the final inflation rate was lower at 4.79 per cent as compared to provisional figure of 4.86 per cent.
The figures revealed that the All India consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) rose by three points to 468 in October, 2001, while the point-to-point inflation decreased by 0.50 per cent to 4.23 per cent as against 4.73 per cent in the previous month.
There was no change in the price of fuel items but primary articles and maufactured products became cheaper by 0.1 per cent respectively, while the index for primary articles group declined to 168.1 from 168.2, mainly due to cheaper non-food articles, though food articles became costlier.
The index was 161.9 in the previous year period.
As per the data, food articles group index showed an increase of 0.2 per cent to rise to 177.5 from 177.2 following an increase in prices of vegetables (3 per cent), fruits (2 per cent), ragi, masur, eggs and fish-marine (2 per cent each) and condiments and spices (1 per cent).
But there was a fall in the prices of fish-inland (5 per cent), jowar and bajra (4 per cent each), mutton (2 per cent) and rice, maize, barley, moong and urad (1 per cent each), while the index for non-food articles group fell by 0.8 per cent to 148.3 from 149.5 on account of cheaper sunflower (10 per cent), groundnut seed and linseed (2 per cent each) and mesta, rape, mustard seed and castor seed (1 per cent each).
There was an increase during this period for prices of kardi seed (7 per cent), niger seed (4 per cent), raw silk, copra and tobacco (2 per cent each) and fodder (1 per cent).
But there was no change in the fuel, power, light and lubricants group index , which remained at the previous weeks level of 231.6 and the index was 220.9 a year ago.
Official sources revealed that the index for manufactured products group came down to 144.3 from 144.4 due to fall in the prices of food products, paper, textiles, chemicals and non-metallic mineral products.
The index was 142.6 in the previous year.
Food products group index fell by 0.2 per cent to 146.2 from 146.5 owing to 4 per cent decline in the price of coconut oil and 2 per cent in ghee, though there was 1 per cent hike in the price of all kinds of bran.
The index for textiles group marked a decline of 0.3 per cent to 118.6 from 118.9 because of cheaper cotton knitted garments (2 per cent) and cotton yarn-hanks (1 per cent), while there was a 2 per cent rise in the price of woollen yarn.
Paper and paper products group fell by 0.1 per cent to 170.8 from 171 on account of 1 per cent fall in the price of printing paper white.
But the index for chemicals and chemical products group declined by 0.1 per cent to 169.5 from 169.6 as prices fell for liquid nitrogen ( 9 per cent), polystrene (6 per cent), and phenol (2 per cent).
But there was an increase in the prices of caustic soda (2 per cent) and all kinds of acids (1 per cent).
