BANGALORE, May 22 (Agencies): Congress today said the previous JDS-BJP government banned arrack without applying its mind and giving thought to its consequence.
Karnataka PCC spokesperson K H Srinivas also flayed former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa for his statement blaming "Congress-JDS conspiracy" for the hooch tragedy.
Srinivas wondered how people used to drinking arrack can kick the habit overnight.
He said recommendation of Commissions which gave report on previous hooch tragedies was not gone through nor was the experience of other states which banned arrack studied.
He said two lakh people were dependent on arrack trade, and once it was banned, some of them took to spurious and illicit arrack manufacturing.
Srinivas said the previous government banned arrack (from July last year) with an eye on "vote-bank" without looking at practical difficulties.
"Yeddyurappa should unconditionally withdraw his statment and tender an apology (for his statement)", Srinivas said.
