BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN, Nov 10 (REUTERS): Shouting their glee at their capture of a northern city, Afghan opposition fighters rolled a dozen more tanks towards the front line facing the Taliban near Kabul, but gave no hint if an assault was planned.
Five years slugging it out in the trenches have been eclipsed by a five-week-old US bombing campaign against the ruling Taliban that yesterday delivered the opposition northern alliance its first reward.
The key northern town of Mazar-i-Sharif fell to forces led by Uzbek warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum late in the evening and opposition leaders say their troops are now rolling back Taliban lines east and west.
