Kashmir to host national sports events once again

SRINAGAR, JUN 15 (Agencies) : For the first time in two decades, the Kashmir valley is set to stage a series of national sports events including the prestigious Federation Cup handball and C K Nayudu U-19 cricket tournament.

National football and kabaddi tournaments, in which Sri Lanka is likely to participate, would also be held in the valley later this year, official sources said.

Efforts were also on to host a table tennis championship in the valley, the sources added.

Following Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's go ahead to hold sports events in the valley, the sports council, at its recent meeting, requested the Army and the security forces to take steps for vacating all sports infrastructure to enable the sportspersons to avail the facilities of youth hostels and stadia.

During the meeting, members of the council expressed concern over non-availability of indoor stadium, cricket stadium and youth hostels for players as these are being used by the security forces since the start of militancy in the state.

Sayeed had called upon the Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports to create a sports culture in the state.
