TEHRAN, Oct 26 (Reuters) Iranian president Mohammad Khatami hasoffered to cooperate with other countries, including the UnitedStates, to set up a new government in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Khatami made his offer after talks with Austrian chancellorWolfgang Schuessel Yesterday, who was on a day-long visit to Iran.
"We must pave the way for a transition of power to abroad-based government and organising general electionsincorporating all tribes and clans in Afghanistan, Khatami saidin a news conference with Schuessel.
Iran has opposed the U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan,launched to punish the ruling Taliban Militia for refusing tohand over Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden, the main suspectin the September 11 suicide attacks in the United States.
But Tehran regards the Taliban as extremists who give Islama bad name and backs efforts to topple them.
