Kidney kingpin had links with Nepal minister

NEW DELHI, Feb 4(Agencies): More facts are tumbling out in the multi-crore kidney racket.

Police sources have told CNN-IBN that three Turkish nationals had died during kidney transplant operations carried out by the key accused in the scam, Amit Kumar.

A man named Mehmood died in October 2003, and two othes - Ahmed and Ismat - died in 2005.

In all three cases, death was attributed to cardiac arrest.

The Turkish embassy had in fact sought a probe into the deaths in February 2006.

While Amit Kumar conducted the operations, his associate, Upendra, took care of the details, including disposing off the bodies.

All this was revealed during the interrogation of Upendra's driver Harpal.

Meanwhile, Upendra - who is also in police custody - has revealed that Amit Kumar owned a hospital in Nepal.

He reportedly had help from a minister in the Nepal Government.

Upendra says Amit was scheduled to leave for Nepal on Januray 26 .

One of his accomplices, a Turkish national named Kavita, had reportedly been waiting for his arrival in Nepal with five patients.

Last week, Upendra had claimed that Amit had connections with an MP from Haryana, and was also good friends with underworld don Chotta Shakeel.

Upendra also alleged of police complicity in the case.

He had claimed that he was caught by the police early this year, but managed to get out by paying a hefty bribe.

MNS supporters attack Bachchan residence MUMBAI, Feb 4 (Agencies):Two motor-cycle borne youths threw glass bottles at actor Amitabh Bachchan's residence in the wee hours on Monday in the wake of Maharashtra Navanirman Sena (MNS) attacking the superstar for alleged negligence of Maharashtra.

While police denied any such incident, mediamen deployed outside Bachchan's bungalow anticipating trouble in the wake of clashes between the MNS and Samajwadi Party (SP) supporters on Sunday said they heard verbal abuses being hurled by the duo and also saw a bottle being thrown by them.

Security was already stepped up at Bachchan's house 'Prateeksha' in Juhu following the MNS chief Raj Thackeray's attack on the superstar for preferring Uttar Pradesh over Maharashtra for opening a girls' college.

Senior police inspector Deepak Katdare of the nearby Juhu police station, who denied the attack, said: "Apart from the private security guards posted there, we had also deployed our own men at the spot and no such incident has been observed there during the night." However, a mediaperson present at the spot said: "At around 1:30 am, some cameramen, who were posted outside the bungalow anticipating trouble, heard the abuses and also saw a bottle being thrown at the direction of bungalow." Earlier in the night, SP leader Amar Singh had lodged an FIR against Thackeray and others in South Mumbai's Azad Maidan police station regarding the incident of protest by MNS activists during his press conference on Saturday.

A couple of theatres staging Bhojpuri films outside the metropolis were attacked and five cars were damaged during yesterday's violence after which 15 MNS and five SP activists were arrested.

Amar Singh to move EC for derecognising MNS MUMBAI, Feb 4 (Agencies): Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh today said he would approach the Election Commission seeking derecognition of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in the wake of the party chief's remarks and subsequent violence in Mumbai targetting North Indians.

"The Election Commission should take care of MNS for blatantly violating EC guidelines," Singh, who has lodged an FIR against Raj Thackeray for inciting the violence, said.

"The recent incidents have demonstrated that no one is safe in Mumbai.

As seen from the disturbance outside Amitabh Bachchan's house, when even someone like him is not safe, one can imagine the plight of an ordinary Mumbaikar," he said.

Singh expressed displeasure with the "way police have behaved in the whole episode".

"At the police station, they were blatantly aligning with the other side," he said.

The SP leader also accused Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh of being a 'mute spectator'.

He also ridiculed Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil's statement yesterday that Samajwadi Party leaders have the habit of speaking too much.

"Patil has the habit of doing too little," Singh retorted.
