KT NEWS SERVICE KUPWARA Town, Jan 27: People here today remembered the 27 people who were killed by the security forces 13 years ago.
They however expressed their concern that this massacre has been forgotten.
Thirteen years ago 27 people were killed by the security forces when they resorted to protest demonstration following the beating up of common people by the security forces.
The shopkeepers had observed a strike on January 26 in response of the call given by the militant outfits against the republic-day celebrations.
This, according to the people, had irked the security forces and they sought to take revenge on the next day when the shopkeepers opened their shops and people again appeared in the market.
According to the eye-witnesses, the security forces started beating the shopkeepers and the people asking them why they observed strike on January 26.
When people resisted the move of security forces and took out a protest demonstration against the action of security forces, the later fired in all directions killing more than two dozen people and injuring dozens.
The families of the deceased today organized the ceremony to remember them.
"We do not want that the sacrifices laid by our loved ones, remain in oblivion_ that is why we organized this ceremony", said Ghulam Nabi Waseem, a local resident.
Most of the people in Kupwara complained that the massacre carried out in Kupwara has gone out of the minds of politicians and the human rights organizations as no one refers to this massacre whenever such topics are discussed.
