NEW DELHI, Nov 25 (Agencies): In a novel initiative aimed at spotting talent, Union Law Ministry will select 20 students from various law colleges across the country for hands-on experience.
The move is being seen as an attempt to improve the quality of government affidavits and to guard against slip-ups like the one that sparked a controversy over government's affidavit on the Ram Setu filed in Supreme Court.
The "unpaid" interns will be attached to the ministry's Central Agency Section to apprise them of how cases are handled and to give them an insight into procedures related to drafting of pleadings and filing work in the Supreme Court registry.
The internship scheme will be started as a pilot project and the ministry is understood to be in the process of laying down the guidelines for selection of candidates.
According to officials in the know, a three-member committee is proposed to be set up for drafting guidelines for the scheme.
Some experts whose names are being considered for nomination to the committee include Additional solicitor general (ASG) Mohan Parasaran and K N Chandrashekar.
The ministry has decided to take in four students - in the fourth year of their course - from each of the five law schools at Bangalore, Hyderabad, West Bengal, Bhopal and Jodhpur.
Law minister H R Bhardwaj and law secretary T K Viswanathan are likely to be among those who would be involved in the final selection of candidates - after they are nominated by law schools.
Lankan Air Force bombs strategic LTTE location at Kilinochchi COLOMBO, Nov 25 (Agencies): Sri Lankan Air Force fighter jets today bombed and destroyed a secret satellite communication centre of Tamil Tigers in a rebel-dominated territory as security forces killed at least six guerrillas in the island's embattled northern region.
The target of the Air Force located at Dharmapuram in northeast of Kilinochchi was considered a highly secured place for LTTE leaders as it was equipped with sophisticated satellite communication devices to coordinate the outfit's international activities, the Defence Ministry said.
According to intercepted LTTE radio communication, the rebels suffered heavy losses in the artillery fire by the troops this morning, the ministry said.
The location was identified following thorough air surveillance and on reliable ground information, it said, adding fighter pilots have confirmed the target was effectively achieved.
Defence observers are of the view that the latest achievement of the Air Force would have a devastating impact on the LTTE's intelligence mechanism since the whereabouts of the target was kept as a top secret by the rebel leaders, the ministry said in a statement.
The Air Force attack on the LTTE location came a day after troops killed rebels at Parappakandal in northwestern Mannar in a clash between the two sides, the army said.
In northern Jaffna peninsula, the army launched an artillery attack near a Forward Defence Line at Muhamalai yesterday, destroying an LTTE base, the Defence Ministry said.
