LS poll: Karnataka beckons Gandhi family

NEW DELHI, Feb 18 (UNI) The Karnataka unit of the Congress today invited the 'Gandhi family' to seek election from any constituency of their choice in the state for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

"We will be glad if party president Sonia Gandhi chose to contest the Lok Sabha poll from our state," Karnataka chief minister SM Krishna and PCC (I) chief Janardhana Poojary told newsmen, after their meeting with Gandhi at her residence at 10, Janpath.

Asked who's the PCC wanted only Gandhi, who won Bellary seat in Karnataka along with Amethi in Uttar Pradesh last time, Krishna said, "we will welcome any member of the Gandhi family Sonia, Priyanka and Rahul." If they contested from Karnataka, "we will ensure that they get elected." Krishna added that they could select any constituency of choice in Karnataka which has 28 Lok Sabha seats.

A high-level meeting on LS poll preparation today LUCKNOW, Feb 18 (UNI) A high-level meeting of senior district officials would be held here tomorrow to assess the preparation for the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Uttar Pradesh chief secretary VK Diwan and state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vijay Sharma would chair the meeting to be attended by the Divisional Commissioners and other officials of all the 61 districts in the state.

Official sources said the meeting would discuss the requirement of central forces and other matters related to the smooth conduct of LS elections.

The district officials would also be directed to step up the revision of electoral rolls in their areas so that the process is completed latest by second week of next month.

Later, the CEO alongwith other officials is slated to go to Delhi to attend a meeting called by the Chief Election Commissioner on Friday.

He would present the state report at the meeting.
