Many parts of Dal Lake frozen in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Jan 7 (UNI): Many parts of the Dal Lake here were today frozen with night temperature falling to minus 5.9 degree the coldest in Kashmir in the season so far.

However, the days continued to be warm and pleasant with temperature remaining above normal owing to clear and sunny weather.

The frozen portion attracted the attention of many people early this morning.

However, the ice melted as the day progressed.

The Dal Lake was first frozen fully in the early sixties when the minimum temperature went down to minus 10-12 degree.

It is even said a vehicle passed over Dal surface at that time.

The lake was again completely frozen in 1986, and was transformed into a cricket ground by the children, much to the amusement of thousands of tourists besides locals.

Met office here said the minimum temperature plummeted to minus 5.9 degree Celsius, the coldest of the season so far.

It said the days in Kashmir were warm despite icy cold winds sweeping the entire belt.
