YANGON, May 2 (Reuters) Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, under house arrest for the last five years, should be able to vote in a May constitutional referendum as her name is on the voter list, witnesses and party members today said.
''Her name was found on the electoral roll,'' one member of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party told Reuters.
The official electoral roll was released today, and one person said they had seen Suu Kyi's name at the bottom of the 190 page list for the relevant ward in Yangon, the former capital.
''Her number is 2281,'' the person told Reuters.
Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi, the daughter of independence hero Aung San, has spent more than 12 of the last 18 years in prison or under house arrest.
All visitors apart from her cook and doctor are barred and her telephone line is cut.
Myanmar heads into a referendum on May 10 to vote on a new constitution the ruling military, which has been in power since 1962, bills as one stage in a seven-step ''roadmap to democracy'' to culminate in multi-party elections in 2010.
However, Suu Kyi's opposition NLD has rejected the charter since it guarantees the army a quarter of seats in parliament, control of key ministries and the right to suspend the constitution at will.
Analysts believe Suu Kyi could well be made to cast her ballot behind closed doors and in advance of the May 10 plebiscite to prevent her from appearing in public.
