NEW DELHI, Mar 16 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) today refused to comment on BJP’s objection to Congress fielding former Chief Election Commissioner MS Gill for the Rajya Sabha polls.
“I have nothing to say on the issue,” Deputy Election Commissioner AN Jha told reporters while responding to queries.
Earlier in the day, the BJP had decried former Chief Election Commissioners (CEC) joining political parties, stating that the trend would erode the credibility of the institution and was detrimental to democracy.
The Congress had fielded former CEC TN Seshan against LK Advani in the Gandhinagar constituency in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls.
The BJP-led government, on the other hand, has also appointed former Comptroller and Auditor General (also a constitutional post) TN Chaturvedi as Karnataka governor.
