PM offers assistance to Iraq in conducting elections

NEW DELHI, Nov 5 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has offered India's assistance in training Iraqi personnel for holding elections in the war ravaged country.

"The Prime Minister has said that India is ready to train the Iraqi Election Commission officials here for holding elections in Iraq," Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran told reporters here.

Dr Singh's offer came in a letter he sent to US President George W Bush yesterday on his re-election.

India was already extending humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Iraq, Saran pointed out and said New Delhi desired an early return to democracy in that country.
