SHILLONG, May 22 (Agencies): Polling is on for the by-election to the Tura Lok Sabha seat amid tight security today.
The by-poll was necessitated after PA Sangma resigned following his election as an MLA.
The former LS Speaker has held the seat for the last thirty years.
PA Sangma's daughter Agatha is pitted against Congress nominee and former state minister Zenith Sangma in the battle of pride that comes two months after the Congress, despite emerging as the single largest party in the assembly elections, was forced to sit in the opposition after Sangma cobbled up the regional forces to form the government.
Initial reports said the turn-out was low, with eight per cent polling recorded till 9 am.
Over 4 lakh voters were eligible to exercise their francise.
The polling, which began at 7 am, will continue till 4 pm.
Meanwhile, Congress yesterday lodged a complaint of code violation against PA Sangma, accusing him of announcing government schemes and projects during election rallies.
On the other hand, a zonal officer entrusted with the task of supervising the polling was arrested yesterday for dereliction of duty.
He was later released on bail, official sources said.
