Protest against 72 hr long search operation

KT NEWS SERVICE SRINAGAR, Mar 2: Protest demonstrations today rocked Matribugh village in Shopian against a prolonged cordon and search operation in the village.

Army opened firing in air and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the mob.

Reports from Matribugh said the troops continued the search operation in the area on third consecutive day.

The locals were herded towards a field in the area in the chilly winter.

The locals were infuriated by the 72 hour long operation and rented the air with strong slogans demanding an end to cordon.

They said their condition is pathetic and they blamed forces of harassing them.

Reports said the army tried to restrain the crowd which, however, continued their resistance.

Troops resorted to a fierce cane charge and opened firing in air to disperse them.

An army officer and a jawan, it is pertinent to mention, was killed in the village during an encounter two days back.

Despite resistance by the locals, the cordon was on when the last reports came in.
