Punjab BJP chief overhauls state body

CHANDIGARH, May 12 (Agencies): The new Punjab BJP chief, Rajinder Bhandari, today re-constituted the 14-member party body in the state, giving preference to new faces and representation to the dalits.

Out of the 14 office bearers announced by Bhandari at a news conference here, nine were new faces while five were experienced party leaders.

Two members are from the dalit community in the state body which also has a lone woman member.

Virender Kaur Thandi has been appointed as vice president whereas Vijay Sampla and Rakesh Gill, both from the dailt community, have been appointed as vice-president and secretary respectively.

The re-constituted state body will have five vice presidents, three general secretaries, five secretaries and a treasurer, Bhandari, an RSS man recently appointed as the new Punjab BJP chief, said.

The new faces included party MLA from Fazilka Surjit Jyani (vice president), Virender Kaur Thandi (vice president) and Bal Krishan Mittal (Treasurer).

Bhandari said that district presidents were also likely to be changed soon.

On the corruption case against former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Bhandari said "Amarinder is not on the agenda of the BJP." "In Amarinder is case law will take its own course," he said.

Bhandari said his party will stick to its demand for the post of Deputy Chief Minister.

"We still stick to our demand for the post of Deputy Chief Minister for an experienced person from the BJP," he added.
