Purulia arms drop convict Peter Bleach released

KOLKATA, Feb 4 (UNI) British national and Purulia arms drop convict Peter Bleach, whose remaining sentence in India was remitted by the president following diplomatic pressure by the UK, was released from the Alipore central jail today.

Bleach was whiffed off in a white land cruiser along with British deputy high commissioner Andrew Hall and spokesperson Paul Walsh.

Bleach was on a hunger strike for the past two days to protest the delay in his release from the jail owing to some other cases in Mumbai despite presidential remission.

The release of Peter Bleach was delayed because of two impending cases filed by the Mumbai customs against him.

A large cache of arms, including AK 47 rifles and other sophisticated arms, was brought into India and air-dropped near the headquarters of the religious cult Anand Marg in Purulia on the night of December 17, 1995.

India had earlier turned down the British plea for granting clemency to Bleach.
